The 48th Annual Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference is a major international conference focusing on educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education. We welcome submissions related to educational issues and innovations in computing and engineering at the graduate, undergraduate and pre-college levels. The theme for 2018 is Fostering Innovation Through Diversity. In addition to the traditional FIE topics, we are soliciting submissions for the following thematic tracks: diversity/equity/inclusion in engineering/computing, encouraging and teaching innovation, innovation in software engineering education, upward mobility, and EPICS/service-learning. FIE 2018 continues a long tradition of disseminating results in engineering and computing education. It is an ideal forum for sharing ideas, learning about developments and interacting with colleagues in these fields.
FIE welcomes full papers up to eight-pages and work-in-progress papers up to four-pages that address the broad tracks of (1) innovative practice, (2) research-to-practice, and (3) research. Work-in-progress papers are typically in frontier areas where it is understood the work is in an early or intermediate stage and authors are seeking feedback from the community. Further, FIE welcomes proposals for panels, workshops, and special sessions in order to disseminate scholarly efforts in non-traditional ways. As part of pursuing the frontier of engineering and computing education, FIE will have the following new structural elements for FIE 2018:
1. Double blind review will be instituted for 2018. Please read abstract and paper submission instructions carefully to ensure you complete all author name and affiliation redactions required for double-blind review.
2. Authors will be expected to participate as peer-reviewers. FIE expects its author community to be fully engaged in the conference. Peer-review is an important part of maintaining paper quality.
3. Work In Progress Papers may be presented in a non-traditional format. Nontraditional formats will allow more input for guiding the progress of the presenters’ work.
4. Authors may submit a track of papers. Authors who would like to present in the same session may suggest other papers they would like to be tracked with by submitting a Team Name as part of each paper submission.
5. Best Diversity Paper Award. Awards for exceptional submissions expand to include a new Best Diversity Paper Award.
6. Special Doctoral Student Mentoring opportunities will be available. Graduate students can participate in the Doctoral Symposium, as well
